ICE CREAM SOCIAL – BALC
Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of an August dinner meeting, the BALC will have their BOD meeting plus Ice Cream Social at Sugar Hill Dairy, at Hanson Farm on Route 104. Purchase of ice cream is optional but you should plan to come and hang out with the Bridgewater Academy Lions. We will be voting on a calendar for the year and discussing upcoming projects. Happy to have prospective members join us.
On Sunday, November 17, 2013, from 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM on Bridgewater cable BTV9, the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club will conduct their 21st Annual TV Auction to benefit Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. This tax-exempt non-profit fund provides research grants to determine the causes of eye diseases and to eventually find the cures. MLERFI awards grants for new eye research projects each year.
For this auction, a multiple telephone hookup allows bidders to call in their bids by phone as items are presented and described on TV in real time.
The Bridgewater Academy Lions invite local businesses and organizations to participate in this live TV event by donating new goods and services, giftware, home improvement supplies, jewelry, toys, antiques and collectibles, sporting goods, restaurant gift certificates or other popular items for home or office. (Preferred items will have a minimum $25.00 retail value.)
New bid boards will be presented each hour. In most cases, the higher value items are listed on the “Specials” and “Gift Certificates” boards, which are open for bids throughout the program. In prior years these boards have featured autographed sports memorabilia, theater tickets, dance lessons, jewelry, daily coffee and pastry, airport transport, fine needlework, construction materials, weekend getaways, and more.
In exchange for their donations, businesses and organizations get publicity on TV and a written acknowledgment of their donation. Early donations also are listed in an advance mailing to prospective bidders. Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund receives much-needed funds in the amount of 100% of the highest bid collected for each item. Auction expenses are paid separately from auction sponsorships.
Over the past 20 years, this annual auction televised by BTV has raised more than $200,000.00 in total for eye research. Bridgewater Academy Lions hope to add at least another $10,000.00 for this 21st Annual Auction, but they need the community’s help to do it.
To arrange for drop-off or pickup of your donation, or to become an auction sponsor, send an email to Auction@BridgewaterAcademyLions.org, call (508) 697-3765, or contact any Bridgewater Academy Lion by October 26, 2013.
Thank you for your consideration.

Congratulations to the Higgins Family for producing this enchanting holiday experience in our community for the past 10 years. We are sad to bid a final farewell to the Festival of Lights project. We are grateful to the Higgins family for their generosity and for allowing the Bridgewater Academy Lions to participate with them in this fundraising event to benefit Starlight Charities, Inc., and Lions Charities.
Twelve members of the Bridgewater Academy Lions club worked December 21, 22 and 23rd to help make the Festival a success. The Lions collected money for Santa pictures, sold raffle tickets, and gave out home made cookies and hot chocolate. Many families enjoyed the lights, had their picture taken with Santa and ate cookies! Over $3,000 was added to the BALC Charity account for charitable disbursement in the community and Lions charities.
The BALC received a $500.00 grant from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care under the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini Grant Program due to the efforts of Past President, Lion Paula Doherty. Using this money the Lions were able to shop for and provide Thanksgiving Dinners for 13 needy families as well as contribute fresh chicken and other fixings to the Bridgewater Food Pantry in time for holiday cooking. The Thanksgiving boxes were fully customized to each family’s preferences, using BALC-produced grocery order checklists which the Bridgewater Senior Center/Food Pantry and Veterans Services provided to their neediest clients.
A total of 512 pounds of food was distributed to 13 needy families and to the Bridgewater Food Pantry.
At their 2012 Annual Meeting held on October 25, 2012, the American Red Cross named the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club their “Massachusetts Community Sponsor of the Year.” The following paragraph appeared on page 8 of their meeting program:
Massachusetts Community Sponsor of the Year: Bridgewater Academy Lions
“This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Bridgewater Academy Lions hosting blood drives with the Red Cross. This dedicated group sponsors three blood drives a year led by Elaine Sweetman. Elaine and her dedicated group of volunteers meticulously register each donor with a smile. During their 20 years of service, the Bridgewater Academy Lions have collected more than 2,000 units. The Red Cross is grateful for Elaine’s continuous support and look forward to another 20 years of community service.”
Lions Elaine Sweetman and Mary Damon attended the Red Cross meeting. Elaine accepted the award plaque from Heather Bellwin, Account Manager of the American Red Cross. Elaine brought the plaque with her to the November dinner meeting of the BALC.
On Tuesday, February 26, 2013, the BALC will be meeting at the Boston Tavern Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. There will be a buffet dinner and a cash bar.
The meeting agenda will include the first reading of the Proposed Slate of Officers for the 2013-2014 and any nominations from the floor will be heard. Election of officers will take place at the March Dinner meeting.
District Governor Dave Barbour will be making his official visitation at this meeting along with several members of the District 33-S Leadership Team.
